Take a Break - Satire, but it is still the Truth

This is scary, but there is too much truth to ignore.

I was initially pleased when Fred Thompson joined the coalition of the willing that made up the list of Presidential candidates in the last silly season of Presidential politics. But I found that he was not serious about the campaign and refused to make the necessary payments to Governor Blogojevich to secure the nomination. Judging from the frankness and honesty of the linked clip – I do not expect to see him running for any other elective office in the future. I will miss him. I like the sound of his voice and what he says is generally all right with me too.

So here is a cogent description of our current problems and the cheery future that awaits our new President Elect next month.

Remember now, “Yes, we can.”

In my view this video is emblematic of the reason Fred Thompson did not do better in the primaries. He is an entertaining speaker when he reads from a teleprompter, and uses wit and sarcasm effectively.

What he does not do in the video is offer one single piece of advice as to how to correct the problem. All he does is belittle others, including the current administration and the pending one. All of the "suggestions" in the current video are parodies or sarcasms. He mocks the congressional policies that got us into the current situation, but he neither foresaw the economic downturn nor tried to implement fiscal restraint when it might have helped.

Q: What will you do to ensure economic vibrancy in this country?

A: I think there is no reason to believe that we’re headed for a recession. We’re enjoying 22 quarters of successive economic growth that started in 2001, and then further in 2003 with the tax cuts that we put in place. We’re enjoying low inflation. We’re enjoying low unemployment. The stock market seems to be doing pretty well. I see no reason to believe we’re headed for economic downturn.

Q: The Dow and the S&P 500 are at record highs, and yet, 2/3rds of the people surveyed said we are either in a recession or headed for one. Why the angst?

A: Well, I think there are pockets in the economy. Certainly they’re having difficulty. I think you always find that in a vibrant, dynamic economy. I think that not enough has been done to tell the greatest story never told, and that is that we are enjoying a period of growth right now, and we should acknowledge what got us there and continue those same policies on into the future.

"we should continue those same policies on into the future."

Hindsight is always more acute than foresight.
